Een heleboel laatste woorden bij het politieke opruiingsproces op 19 juli 2023 vanwege de oproep om de A12 te blokkeren op 28 januari 2023.Video door documentairemaker Maartje van Poelje.
Terwijl Shell in Nigeria de grond vervuilt met hun smerige olie en daarmee het land van boeren vernietigt, denken mensen in Nederland nog dat het niet zo’n vaart zal lopen met de opwarming van de aarde en smeren op het strand onder de rook van Tata wat extra zonnebrand crème op het lijf. Ik zeg: kanker! Ik zeg: moord. Ik zeg: stop de fossiele subsidies die bedrijven aanmoedigen door te gaan met vervuiling.
Terwijl mensen in Nederland zich na een paar dagen hitte en een plaatselijke zomerstorm zorgen maken over het verdorren van gras en planten in de tuin (als ze die hebben), maken mensen zich in Somalië zorgen over al jaren aanhoudende droogte, mislukkende oogsten en of ze nog wel te eten zullen hebben. Ik zeg: hongersnood! Ik zeg: moord. Ik zeg: stop de agrarische industrie die wereldwijd door ontbossing en CO2 uitstoot de opwarming van de aarde aanjaagt.
Terwijl in Nederland klimaatactivisten vervolgd worden voor het oproepen tot een burgerlijk ongehoorzame demonstratie op een weg, zien we in landen om ons heen de repressie tegen klimaatstrijders al veel verder gaan. Het verbod van Soulevements de la Terre, de Beweging van de Opstanden van de Aarde in Frankrijk. Massa arrestaties van slow marchers van Just Stop Oil in Engeland. Invallen bij klimaatactivisten van Letzte Generation in Duitsland… Maar zelfs dat alles is nog niks vergeleken met de keiharde onderdrukking die wereldwijd ver van ons bed inheemse volkeren te verduren krijgen als ze bijvoorbeeld de ontbossing van de Amazone in Brazilië proberen tegen te gaan. Het verzet tegen de aanleg van de Dakota Access Pipeline in de VS waarvoor de Standing Rock Sioux Tribe veel steun organiseerde, werd ook met veel geweld beantwoord. De recente repressie die het verzet tegen Cop City in Atlanta ten deel viel, met de politiemoord op bosbeschermer Tortuguita en aanklachten wegens terrorisme tegen demonstranten zijn we ook nog niet vergeten.
Ik zeg: misdaad! Ik zeg: ecocide. Verzet tegen de veroorzakers van klimaatverandering is een kwestie van solidariteit. Ik zeg: stop de repressie die wereldwijd verdedigers van land, water en lucht afstraft omdat ze hun leefomgeving en daarmee de planeet gezond willen houden.
Overheden, industrie, grootkapitaal: wat zij doen is je reinste doodsverachting. Maar dan wel die van anderen en niet die van henzelf.
Het zijn niet de rijken in hun villa’s, ver van naar uitlaatgassen stinkende steden, ver van gif uitstotende fabrieken, ver van vliegvelden waar geraas en neerslag van kerosinedampen dagelijkse kost is, die ziek worden en sterven. Zij dwingen laagbetaalde arbeiders tot werken voor nog meer winst en ongeremde groei. Zij vreten energie alsof die oneindig is.
Ik zeg hen: komt de klimaatramp niet aan je deur kloppen, dan doen klimaatstrijders het. Want het helpt niet dat burgers individueel niet of minder vliegen, veganist worden, de dure treinreis aanvaarden die niet gesubsidieerd wordt. Wij moeten in actie komen en ons de greenwashing niet laten welgevallen. En dus blokkeren we de A12. Ik was erbij op 27 mei. Ik ben er weer in september. En dat is nog maar het begin. Dat is nog niets vergeleken met wat klimaatstrijders nog meer kunnen en zullen doen.
Het zijn niet de zich boeren noemende agro-kapitalisten die lijden onder de ontbossing van het regenwoud voor veevoer of onder de erbarmelijke omstandigheden van de vele dieren die als bezit worden gezien om uit te buiten en te af te slachten. Nee, het zijn niet deze lieden die lijden onder het stikstof dat de natuur verstikt en ontkalkt en die insecten en vogels van nageslacht en het leven zelf berooft. Zij vreten met hun mest de aarde kaal alsof die onuitputtelijk is.
Ik zeg hen: komt de klimaatramp niet aan je deur kloppen, dan doen klimaatstrijders het. Want de dieren die op het altaar van het kapitalisme in de pan worden gehakt kunnen het niet. En als de agro-industrie met zijn veevoergiganten en slachthuizenpropaganda denkt dat hun belangen niet kunnen worden geschaad, dan zullen ze nog verbaasd opkijken. Klimaatstrijders kunnen nog veel meer doen dan alleen maar aan de deur kloppen.
En het zijn niet de politici met hun loze beloftes en hun lobbyvriendjes die lijden onder de noodzaak om te vluchten voor droogte, orkanen, overstromingen, hongersnood, landontginning, verwoesting door mijnbouw en luchtvervuiling. Het zijn niet de politici die lijden onder alle neo-koloniale afbraak georganiseerd vanuit het globale noorden, die geconfronteerd worden met gemilitariseerde grenzen die vluchtelingen tegenhouden, martelen en verkrachten, opsluiten en doodschieten.
Politici blijven maar doen alsof vluchtelingen de profiteurs zijn. Juist afgelopen week hebben we de misdadige deal met Tunesië gezien, bekokstoofd door Mark Rutte met de Italiaanse fasciste Giorgia Meloni, want klimaatvluchtelingen moeten maar terug naar hun zogenaamd veilige land. Om dit te kunnen blijven doen spelen politici mensen tegen elkaar uit, wakkeren racisme en fascisme aan en roepen op tot haat. Maar de ware profiteurs zitten niet in een vluchtelingenkamp maar aan de top, op hun miljoenenjacht.
Ik zeg hen: komt de klimaatramp niet aan je deur kloppen, dan doen klimaatstrijders het. Want de vluchtelingen zijn verdronken in de Middellandse Zee of van dorst omgekomen de woestijn. Die zijn opgesloten in door en voor de EU gewenste en gebouwde kampen en gevangenissen. Die kunnen niet veilig op straat lopen zonder vrees voor vervolging, arrestatie en deportatie. De grenzen op de wereldkaart roepen op tot nationalisme en zijn gereedschap voor bevolkingspolitiek. Maar de aarde heeft geen grenzen. De aarde heeft bergen, savannes, toendra’s, moerassen, bossen, rivieren, oceanen.
Maar hoe lang nog zit daar leven in?
De klimaatcatastrofe die op ons afkomt is de doodsoorzaak van al het leven op de wereld. De klimaatcatastrofe die er feitelijk al is, onzichtbaar voor ons hier, wordt veroorzaakt door kapitalisme. En kapitalisme is geen abstractie. Aan die klimaatcatastrofe zijn aanwijsbare bedrijven en personen die deze bedrijven runnen persoonlijk schuldig.
Zij dienen verantwoordelijk worden gehouden en tot stoppen gedwongen. Niet goedschiks, dan kwaadschiks. Namens de insecten, de bijen en de vlinders. Namens de vogels, de vissen en de kikkers. Namens de koeien, varkens, kippen, eenden, ganzen, geiten, schapen, namens alle dieren in de vee-industrie. Namens alle in het restant wilde natuur levende dieren, de wolven, reeën, vossen, hazen, konijnen. De leeuwen, olifanten, bizons, paarden, giraffen… Teveel om op te noemen. En laat ik tot slot de menselijke dieren niet vergeten. Zij, die van hun stem beroofd zijn. Zij, van wie de stemmen alleen tellen tijdens de verkiezingen. Daar ben ik er een van, en ik ben nog lang niet de meest onfortuinlijke, ook al ben ik hier geroepen om mij tegen de politieke aanklacht van opruiing te verdedigen.
Wel. Verdedigen, daar is een advocaat goed in en die heeft in alles gelijk. Sprekend voor mijzelf: ik ben anarchist en om die reden opgepakt en vervolgd. Het OM ontkent dat en dat is laf. Ik zal WEL zeggen waar ik voor sta: de wetten van de staat, daar hou ik me uit principe niet aan. Ik voer mijn eigen moreel kompas. Ik erken ook niet uw recht om over mij te oordelen, ook al is u dat gegeven.
Of deze politiek gemotiveerde aanklacht betekent dat ik voor de oproep om de A12 te blokkeren in uw ogen ‘strafbaar’ ben, is dan ook niet een vraag die ik me vooraf gesteld heb. Maar uw besluit is wel relevant voor al diegenen die in actie wensen te komen en daartoe op willen roepen zonder uit hun huis te worden gehaald. Want helaas, die wetten die als instrument worden gebruikt om klimaatstrijd te onderdrukken, die zijn er. Maar vandaag constateer ik met grote vreugde dat het OM met deze politieke vervolging riant faalt, zelfs het tegenovergestelde bereikt. Ik dank dan ook het OM voor het door middel van onze arrestaties groter helpen maken van de blokkade acties van Extinction Rebellion op de A12. Ik dank het OM voor zeven nieuwe kameraden en vrienden die ik anders nooit had leren kennen. Onverwachte verbonden zullen worden gesloten, dankzij het OM. Goed gedaan!
Maar los van de ironie die deze werkelijkheid is: de situatie is te ernstig om te blijven lachen en tegelijk lach ik de staat met zijn cellen en dagvaardingen in het gezicht uit. Onze oproepen horen toegejuicht en niet afgestraft te worden. Het feit dat politici en officieren van justitie echter niet staan te juichen wanneer duizenden mensen een weg blokkeren, het feit dat zij er met politiegeweld een einde aan laten maken, is geen reden om het te laten en het oproepen daartoe te staken.
Ik zeg: blokkeer de A12 op 9 september en de dagen daarna. Ik zeg: deze actie is nog vreedzaam en aangekondigd. Deze actie is burgerlijk ongehoorzaam. Deze actie staat nog niet daadwerkelijk in de weg van de industrie die subsidies krijgt alsof er geen geld nodig is voor zorg, scholen, huisvesting en het verwelkomen van mensen die door de westerse industrie en wapenhandel op de vlucht zijn gejaagd. Maar dan nog is deze actie nodig. Zie het als een waarschuwing, wat mij betreft.
Ik zeg: klimaatstrijd staat aan het begin van nog veel meer actie die nodig is om deze aardkloot van de ondergang te redden. Als je het mij vraagt: aan het begin van nog veel effectievere maatregelen van onderop. Staten en kapitalisten zoeken het allicht hogerop en sturen raketten de ruimte in voor hun miljardenzoektocht naar Planeet Aarde 2.0. Maar we leven niet in Star Trek en bovendien: doe het andere planeten niet aan die ook nog eens te koloniseren en er het leven te knechten en te vernietigen.
Ik sluit hiermee mijn betoog af. Ik groet de klimaatstrijders van de toekomst. En ik zeg: Wat niet mag, dat kan nog steeds.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION: They are destroying the planet. What are we going to do about it?

I say: cancer! I say: murder. I say: stop the fossil subsidies that encourage companies to continue to pollute.
While people in the Netherlands are worried about the withering of grass and plants in the garden (if they have them) after a few days of heat and a local summer storm, people in Somalia are worried about years of drought, failed harvests and whether they will still have something to eat. I say: famine! I say: murder. I say: stop the agricultural industry that is driving global warming through deforestation and CO2 emissions worldwide.
While in the Netherlands climate activists are prosecuted for calling for a civil disobedient demonstration on a road, we see repression against climate fighters going much further in countries around us. The ban of Soulevements de la Terre, the Movement of the Revolts of the Earth, in France. Mass arrests of Just Stop Oil slow marchers in England. Raids on Letzte Generation climate activists in Germany…
But even all that is nothing compared to the harsh oppression that indigenous peoples worldwide endure when they try to prevent the deforestation of the Amazon in Brazil, for example. Opposition to the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline in the US, for which the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe organized a lot of support, was also met with a lot of violence. We have also not forgotten the recent crackdown on the Cop City resistance in Atlanta, with the police killing of forest protector Tortuguita and terrorism charges against protesters.
I say: crime! I say: ecocide. Resisting the causes of climate change is a matter of solidarity. I say: stop the repression that punishes defenders of land, water and air worldwide because they want to keep their living environment and thus the planet healthy.
Governments, industry, big business: what they do is pure contempt for death. But it’s the death of others and not of themselves.
It is not the rich in their villas, far from exhaust-smelling cities, far from poison-emitting factories, far from airports where the noise and deposit of kerosene fumes are a daily fare, who get sick and die. They force low-wage workers to work for even more profit and unrestrained growth. They gobble up energy as if it were infinite.
I tell them: if the climate disaster doesn’t knock on your door, climate fighters will. Because it does not make a difference that citizens individually do not fly or fly less, become vegan, accept the expensive train journey that is not subsidized. We must act and not put up with the greenwashing. And so we block the A12. I was there on May 27. I’ll be there again in September. And that’s just the beginning. That is nothing compared to what more climate fighters can and will do.
It is not the agro-capitalists who call themselvers farmers who suffer from the deforestation of the rainforest for fodder or the appalling conditions of the many animals that are considered property to be exploited and slaughtered. No, it is not these people who suffer from the nitrogen that suffocates and decalcifies nature and that deprives insects and birds of offspring and life itself. They strip the earth with their fertilizer as if it were inexhaustible.
I tell them: if the climate disaster doesn’t knock on your door, climate fighters will. Because the animals that are slaughtered on the altar of capitalism can’t do it. And if the agro-industry, with its animal feed giants and slaughter house propaganda, thinks their interests cannot be harmed, they will be taken by surprise. Climate warriors can do much more than just knock on the door.
And it is not the politicians with their empty promises and their lobby partners who suffer from the need to flee from drought, hurricanes, floods, famine, land clearing, mining devastation and air pollution. It is not the politicians who suffer from all the neo-colonial demolition organized from the global north, who face militarized borders that detain, torture and rape, imprison and shoot refugees.
Politicians keep pretending that refugees are the profiteers. Just last week we saw the criminal deal with Tunisia, concocted by Mark Rutte with the Italian fascist Giorgia Meloni, because climate refugees should return to their supposedly safe countries. In order to continue to do this, politicians turn people against each other, fanning racism and fascism and calling for hatred. But the real profiteers are not in a refugee camp, but at the top, on their million-dollar hunt.
I tell them: if the climate disaster doesn’t knock on your door, climate fighters will. For the refugees have drowned in the Mediterranean or died of thirst in the desert. They are locked up in camps and prisons that are desired and built for the EU. They cannot walk the streets safely without fear of persecution, arrest and deportation. The borders on the world map call for nationalism and are tools for population politics. But the earth has no boundaries. The earth has mountains, savannas, tundras, swamps, forests, rivers, oceans.
But how long will there still be life in it?
The climate catastrophe that is approaching us is the cause of the death of all life in the world. The climate catastrophe that is actually already there, invisible to us here, is caused by capitalism. And capitalism is not an abstraction. Identifiable companies and the people who run these companies are personally guilty of this climate catastrophe. They should be held accountable and forced to stop. If not willingly then through force. On behalf of the insects, the bees and the butterflies. On behalf of the birds, the fish and the frogs. On behalf of the cows, pigs, chickens, ducks, geese, goats, sheep, on behalf of all animals in the livestock industry. On behalf of all animals living in the remaining wild nature, the wolves, deer, foxes, hares, rabbits. The lions, elephants, bison, horses, giraffes… Too many to mention. And finally, let me not forget the human animals. Those who are deprived of their voice. Those whose voices only count during elections. I am one of them, and I am by no means the most unfortunate, even though I have been called here to defend myself against the political charge of sedition.
Well. Defending, that’s what a lawyer is good at and he’s right about everything. Speaking for myself: I am an anarchist and for that reason arrested and persecuted. The Publice Prosecution denies that and that is cowardly. I WILL say what I stand for: the laws of the state, I do not abide by them on principle. I run my own moral compass. Nor do I recognize your right to judge me, even though it is given to you.
Whether this politically motivated indictment means that I am ‘punishable’ in your eyes for the call to block the A12 is therefore not a question I asked myself beforehand. But your decision is relevant to all those who wish to take action and call for action without being taken from their homes. Because unfortunately, those laws that are used as an instrument to suppress climate struggle, they are there. But today I note with great joy that the Public Prosecution has failed miserably with this political prosecution, even achieved the opposite. I therefore thank the Public Prosecution for helping to make the blockade actions of Extinction Rebellion on the A12 bigger through our arrests. I thank the Public Prosecution for seven new comrades and friends that I would otherwise never have met. Unexpected alliances will be closed, thanks to the Public Prosecution. Well done!
But regardless of the irony that this reality is: the situation is too serious to keep laughing and at the same time I laugh the state with its cells and subpoenas in the face. Our calls should be welcomed and not punished. However, the fact that politicians and prosecutors do not cheer when thousands of people block a road, the fact that they end it with police violence, is no reason to stop calling for it.
I say: block the A12 on September 9 and the days after. I say: this action is still peaceful and announced. This action is civil disobedience. This action does not yet actually stand in the way of industry receiving subsidies as if no money was needed for healthcare, schools, housing and welcoming people who have been displaced by Western industry and the arms trade. But even then this action is necessary. Take it as a warning, as far as I’m concerned.
I say: climate struggle is the beginning of much more action that is needed to save this planet from destruction. If you ask me: at the start of even more effective bottom-up measures. States and capitalists are probably looking even higher up and are sending rockets into space in their billion-dollar search for Planet Earth 2.0. But we don’t live in Star Trek and moreover: don’t do it to other planets as well to colonize them and enslave and destroy life there.
I conclude my speech with this. I salute the climate fighters of the future. And I say: What is not allowed, can still be done.
