NO CLIMATE JUSTICE ON OCCUPIED LAND!
En ook niet waar de organisatie van de klimaatmars twee spreeksters de mond snoert.

Waar zal ik beginnen? De klimaatmars vandaag? Wat er aan vooraf ging? Woest was ik vanmiddag. Woest ben ik nog steeds. Dit wil ik er nu over zeggen. Ongecensureerd. Zonder edits.

Al voor de mars van vandaag kwam er bericht dat de organisatie van de klimaatmars de woorden ‘From the river to the sea’ niet wilde horen. Een van de spreeksters, Sahar Shirzad, zou het niet mogen uitspreken. Het was reden om de leuze ‘From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free’ juist veelvuldig te scanderen tijdens de mars. We deden het vanuit het zwart groene blok (eco anarchisme), maar meer mensen deden het. Ik heb een Palestijnse vrouw in tranen gezien van emotie toen wij het deden, ons niks aantrokken van alle vuile hetze vanuit het zionistische kamp, de media, de meeheulende politici en nu de organisatie van de klimaatmars. Fuck die bullshit, wij roepen dit.

Hoe laat is het? Solidaritijd!

De hele bende in de tweede kamer, burgemeester Halsema en zoveel meer. Ze brengen de vrijheidsstrijd van de Palestijnen terug tot een woord: antisemitisme. Een beschuldiging die mij zelf ook ten deel is gevallen afgelopen week. Schijt daaraan. We laten ons de mond niet snoeren. Wij weten dat het een stok is waarmee al wordt geslagen sinds 1948, zolang als de Palestijnen zich al tegen de koloniale bezetting moeten verzetten. Het is een poging die er nog altijd niet in slaagt dat verzet de kop in te drukken. Dat, en heel veel geweld. Al 75 jaar vernietiging van het land van de Palestijnen. Land waar ze vanaf gejaagd worden. Vele Palestijnen vermoord en ontvoerd, kinderen incluis, en in cellen gegooid, mishandeld en gemarteld.
Olijfbomen van 4000 jaar oud omzagen of in brand steken. Waterbronnen kapot maken. Wat sinds 7 oktober gebeurt is niets anders dan een escalatie, een versnelling van de genocide die al die tijd al in trager tempo zich voltrok. De Palestijnen hebben meer dan het volste recht zich uit alle macht te verzetten en te eisen dat Palestina weer Palestina wordt: een land waarin verschillende volkeren samen kunnen leven, zonder dat de een de ander overheerst. Dat is wat het betekent: From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free. Wie er antisemitisme in wil zien, doet dat om de zionistische bezettingsmacht te steunen. Met geld, met wapens, met propaganda, en met censuur.

De organisatie van de klimaatmars, was die daar bang voor? Voor dat label ‘antisemitisme’? Waren die bang om de gematigde witte middle class demonstranten te verliezen? Liever racisme en kolonialisme in de eigen gelederen dan waarlijk bedreven solidariteit? Het is om te kotsen! Kots over de vals bedreven klimaatrechtvaardigheid die alleen maar het eigen belang lijkt te dienen.

We kwamen aan op het Museumplein, stonden vrij dicht bij het podium. En daar kwam Sahar. Ze vertelde dat ze het absurd vond (even vrij vertaald) dat zij, een Afghaanse, daar wel kon staan, dat er geen Palestijnse vertegenwoordiger was gevraagd, en ze introduceerde Sara Rachdan, gaf Sara haar plaats, haar spreektijd, en Sara begon te spreken. In niet mis te verstane bewoordingen vertelde ze wat er in Palestina gebeurd is de afgelopen 75 jaar en wilde gaan vertellen wat er nu gebeurt en plotseling was het geluid weg. Haar microfoon was uitgezet. Ook de microfoon van Sahar was uitgezet. We zagen hen beiden praten maar we hoorden niets meer. Dit was geen technisch mankement. Hen werd de mond gesnoerd. We begonnen te roepen: LET HER SPEAK! En: FREE PALESTINE! En: FROM THE RIVER TO THE SEA – PALESTINE WILL BE FREE! Consternatie om ons heen. Boze mensen. Een vrouw vlak voor me ging tekeer dat we ons mond moesten houden. We zagen Sahar en Sara door bewakers (sic!) weggevoerd worden. Het was ongelooflijk dat dit kon gebeuren. We bleven doorgaan met roepen en scanderen. De vrouw vlak voor me wendde zich tot mij dat we op moesten houden. Om razend van te worden. Kom je voor klimaatrechtvaardigheid hier? Wat is rechtvaardig aan mensen de mond snoeren, aan censuur door de organisatie van de klimaatmars?! De gematigdheid druipt er in bloed vanaf. Wat is klimaatstrijd zonder strijd? Wat is klimaatstrijd als de organisatie strijdt tegen mensen die ze uitgenodigd hebben om te komen spreken? Het stelt geen ene moer voor.

En toen werd Greta vol verve aangekondigd. Maar er kwam geen Greta. Waar bleef Greta? Er kwam een muzikant op het podium. Mooie muziek maar het is een zoethoudertje. We gingen door met scanderen, stopten af en toe even en begonnen dan weer. Even maakte de muzikant een opmerking over Palestina. Ok. Na hem kwam iemand spoken word doen. Het spijt me voor deze mensen dat ik niet weet hoe ze heten. Hun naam heb ik niet onthouden omdat de woede overheerste. * NB. Dankzij lezers weet ik de naam van de spoken word artist. Dit is Mounir Samuel. * Deze zei rake dingen. Hij zei ook dat de organisatie het niet wilde hebben dat gezegd werd: Van de rivier tot de zee. Zo, daar heb je het. Hij zei het wel. Hij maakte onomwonden zijn standpunt duidelijk. En passant kregen Groen Links en PvdA er van langs, partijen die daar stonden met hun vlaggen: bij hen moet je niet zijn als je de klimaatramp tot een halt wilt roepen. Klopt. Niet groen, niet links, maar neoliberaal! Wie hebben ons verraden? Sociaal democraten!
En nu de organisatie van de klimaatmars?

Het mocht de organisatie niets baten om de een na de ander op het podium te zetten om ons te verblijden met muziek en spoken word. Het mocht ook niet baten dat we met ons allen moesten gaan zingen: “Hey Ho Take me by the hand – strong in solidarity we stand – fight for climate justice… “ Rot op zeg. Huichelarij, dat is het dan. Hoe kun je? Hoe durf je? Waar was de in woord beleden climate justice? Zeker niet in daden! En.. waar was Greta tijdens dit alles?

Ik heb het niet zo op persoonsverheerlijking. Het moet niet uitmaken wie daar op dat podium staat te spreken. Hoe bekender mensen zijn, hoe meer ik het gevoel krijg dat we voor bekende namen moeten klappen. Doe mij dan Sara maar, die niemand nog kent en die spreekt met de felheid die nodig is.
Maar eerlijk is eerlijk, het moet gezegd: Greta maakte alles goed (voor nu). Wat zich achter de schermen heeft afgespeeld terwijl wij – Palestijnse mensen en mensen van het zwart groene blok – tegen de klippen op bleven roepen “LET HER SPEAK!”, dat weet ik op dit moment (nog) niet (inmiddels: zie afbeelding hieronder). Maar glorieus was het moment dat Greta met Sahar en Sara het podium op kwam, met een groot spandoek waarvan ik de tekst niet kon lezen vanaf waar ik stond. Ook toen even later de woorden ‘From the river to the sea’ vielen en bijval kreeg uit vele kelen.

Eind goed al goed? Nou nee. Toen Greta nog wat afsluitende woorden sprak kwam er nog een man met een felgroen jasje de microfoon uit haar handen te trekken. Ook weer zo iemand die er niks van wil begrijpen. Alsof klimaatverandering niks met politieke keuzes te maken heeft (en die weer met kapitalisme). Volgens mij vond hij het maar niks dat er nu wel over Palestina was gesproken. Dat soort lui krijg je dus op je actie als je voor de middenmoot gaat en je niet werkelijk solidair uitspreekt met de onderdrukten. Dit soort slap gelul ben ik liever kwijt dan rijk. Met zulke vrienden heb je geen vijanden nodig. Enzovoorts.

Wie had kunnen denken dat we na afloop van deze klimaatmars vooral het gevoel zouden hebben in gevecht te zijn geweest met de organisatie van de klimaatmars in plaats van tegen de klimaatvervuilers, tegen kapitalisme, kolonialisme, en staten? Moeten we eerst winnen van gematigde angsthazen die geen stelling durven nemen voordat we toekomen aan de strijd die we eigenlijk willen voeren? Witte mensen: het gaat niet in de eerste plaats om jullie kinderen en hun en jullie toekomst, en of de dijken in Nederland het wel houden. Het gaat in de eerste plaats om al die mensen die nu al onophoudelijk van hun land worden verdreven door klimaatcatastrofes, veelal het gevolg van decennialang kolonialisme, uitbuiting, diefstal van land, grondstoffen, water, vrijheid, het kappen van bossen, mijnbouw, racisme, oliepijpleidingen zoals nu de East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP). En oorlog, en nog meer kolonialisme en diefstal. Zolang het geld maar rolt in de zakken van de wapenhandel, de fossiele industrie, de agro-industrie. En ja, wat er in Palestina gebeurt heeft er alles mee te maken. Maar hey, wat kan het schelen dat er fosforbommen worden gegooid op burgers, ziekenhuizen worden gebombardeerd, scholen, universiteiten, straten. Dat er kinderen sterven en zionisten dansen op hun graf. Wat kan het schelen dat de onderdrukten hier ver vandaan als eerste lijden onder klimaatverandering? Dat is waar we in eerste plaats voor ten strijde trekken. En niet omdat er ‘anders vluchtelingen hierheen komen’ zoals ik ook wel gehoord heb in die klimaatbeweging, wederom een uiting van wit egoïstisch eigenbelang.. Nee, omdat het onrechtvaardig is dat wie het meeste vervuilen, het minste last ervan hebben, en wie het minste vervuilen er het meeste last van hebben. Daarover gaat klimaatrechtvaardigheid. En je zou verwachten dat wie dat als motto voor een klimaatmars inzet, het ook meent… Maar oké, als we al strijdende eerst door de laffe organisatie van een klimaatmars heen moeten, dan moet dat maar. Basta!

Dus nee, het is niet goed. Ik ben nog steeds woest. Ik wil deze lui diep door het stof zien gaan. Ik wil dat ze zich terugtrekken en leren dat rechtvaardigheid willen moed vereist. Dat het niet het trappen naar beneden is waarmee je wint, maar schoppen naar boven. Dat het innemen van de comfortabele middenpositie, het niet maken van keuzes die wel eens heel hard kunnen zijn en die niet makkelijk zijn, dat dit niet is wat strijd is. Daar sta je dan met je grote podium en je video screens voor tienduizenden mensen jezelf vreselijk te schande te maken. Maar wij zagen de moed van Sahar en Sara. Wij zagen Greta het gezicht van de klimaatmars redden. De organisatie van de klimaatmars mag haar ten diepste dankbaar zijn.

We hebben radicale solidariteit en klimaatrechtvaardigheid en strijd nodig. Zonder compromissen. Ik wil niet nog een keer tegenover een krijsende witte vrouw staan die mij ervan beschuldigt ergens doorheen te scanderen terwijl zojuist twee dappere vrouwen de mond is gesnoerd om vervolgens afgevoerd te worden. Uit. Over. Klaar mee.

Nu ben ik even uitgeraasd. Ik bewaar graag mijn energie voor grotere machtiger vijanden. We moeten door. Dinsdag sit in op Schiphol voor Palestina. 18 uur. Volgende klimaatacties? Ik weet even niet wanneer en hoe. Eerst dit. No climate justice on occupied land! NO CLIMATE JUSTICE ON OCCUPIED LAND! Dat galmt nog na in mijn hoofd. En dat zullen we nog heel vaak laten horen!

NO CLIMATE JUSTICE ON OCCUPIED LAND!
And neither when the organization of the climate march silences two speakers.

Where shall I begin? The climate march today? What preceded it? I was furious this afternoon. I am still furious. This is what I want to say about it now. Uncensored. Without edits.

Even before today’s march, it was reported that the organization of the climate march did not want to hear the words ‘From the river to the sea’. One of the speakers, Sahar Shirzad, was not allowed to say it. It was reason to frequently chant the slogan ‘From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free’ during the march. We did it from the black green bloc (eco anarchism), but more people did it. I saw a Palestinian woman in tears of emotion when we did it, not caring about all the dirty smears from the Zionist camp, the media, the politicians and now the organization of the climate march. Fuck that bullshit, we’re chanting this.

What time is it? Solidarity time!

The whole gang in parliament, Mayor Halsema and so much more. They reduce the Palestinians’ struggle for freedom to one word: anti-Semitism. An accusation that I also received last week. Fuck that. We will not be silenced. We know that it has been the proverbial stick to hit the dog with that has been used since 1948, for as long as the Palestinians have had to resist the colonial occupation. It is an attempt that still fails to quell that resistance. That, and a lot of violence. 75 years of destruction of the land of the Palestinians. Land they are being chased from. Many Palestinians were murdered and kidnapped, including children, and thrown into cells, abused and tortured. Cutting down or burning olive trees that are 4,000 years old. Destroying water sources. What has been happening since October 7 is nothing more than an escalation, an acceleration of the genocide that has been taking place at a slower pace all along. The Palestinians have every right to resist with all their might and demand that Palestine becomes Palestine again: a country in which different peoples can live together, without one dominating the other. That’s what it means: From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free. Anyone who wants to see anti-Semitism in it does so to support the Zionist occupying power. With money, with weapons, with propaganda, and with censorship.

Was the organization of the climate march afraid of that? For that label ‘anti-Semitism’? Were they afraid of losing the moderate white middle class protesters? Would you rather have racism and colonialism in your own ranks than truly practiced solidarity? It’s sickening! I puke over the false climate justice that only seems to serve its own interests.

We arrived at Museumplein, stood quite close to the stage. And there came Sahar. She said that she found it absurd (roughly translated) that she, an Afghan person, could stand there, that no Palestinian representative had been asked, and she introduced Sara Rachdan, gave Sara her speaking time, and Sara began to speak . She told in no uncertain terms what has happened in Palestine over the past 75 years and was about to tell what is happening now and suddenly the sound was gone. Her microphone was turned off. We started shouting: LET HER SPEAK! And: FREE PALESTINE! And: FROM THE RIVER TO THE SEA – PALESTINE WILL BE FREE! Consternation around us. Angry people. A woman right in front of me was ranting about how we should shut up. We saw Sahar and Sara being taken away by guards (sic!). It was unbelievable that this could happen. We continued shouting and chanting. The woman right in front of me turned to me to tell us to stop. Infuriating. Are you here for climate justice? What is fair about silencing people, about censorship by the organization of the climate march?! What is climate struggle without struggle? What is climate struggle if the organization fights against people they have invited to speak? It means nothing.

And then Greta was announced with great enthusiasm. But Greta didn’t show up. Where was Greta? A musician came on stage. Nice music but it’s a sweetener. We continued to chant, stopping every now and then and then starting again. The musician briefly made a comment about Palestine. OK. After him someone came to do spoken word. I’m sorry for these people that I don’t know their names. I didn’t remember their names because the anger dominated. * NB. Thanks to readers I know the name of the spoken word artist. This is Mounir Samuel. * He made some pointed remarks. He also said that the organization did not want it to be said: From the river to the sea. So, there you have it. He did say it. He made his position clear. In passing, he mentioned Groen Links and PvdA, parties that stood there with their flags: you should not vote for them if you want to put a stop to the climate disaster. That’s right. Not green, not left, but neoliberal! Who betrayed us? Social Democrats! And now the organization of the climate march?

It did not help the organization to put one after the other on stage to delight us with music and spoken word. It didn’t help that we all had to sing: “Hey Ho Take me by the hand – strong in solidarity we stand – fight for climate justice… “ Fuck off. Hypocrisy, that’s what it is. How can you? How dare you? Where was the verbally professed climate justice? Certainly not in action! And… where was Greta during all of this?

I’m not really into personality cult. It shouldn’t matter who is speaking on that stage. The more famous people are, the more I get the feeling that we should clap for famous names. I’d rather have someone like Sara, who no one knows yet and who speaks with the fierceness that is necessary.
But to be fair, it has to be said: Greta made everything okay (for now). What happened behind the scenes while we – Palestinian people and people from the black-green bloc – kept shouting “LET HER SPEAK!” against all odds, I do not (yet) know. (in the meantime: check picture below). But it was a glorious moment when Greta came on stage with Sahar and Sara, carrying a large banner that I couldn’t read from where I was standing. Even when a little later the words ‘From the river to the sea’ were uttered, receiving support from many people.

All’s well that ends well? Well no. When Greta said some closing words, a man with a bright green jacket came to pull the microphone from her hands. Another person who doesn’t want to understand anything. As if climate change has nothing to do with political choices (which in turn have everything to do with capitalism). I think he didn’t like the fact that Palestine had now been addressed. This is the sort of people you get people in your action if you go for political center and don’t really express solidarity with the oppressed. I’d rather be rid of this kind of lame bullshit. Who needs enemies with friends like that. And so on.

Who would have thought that after this climate march we would have the feeling that we had been in a fight with the organization of the climate march instead of against the climate polluters, against capitalism, colonialism, and states? Must we first win against moderate cowards who do not dare to take a stand before we get to the battle we actually want to wage? White people: it is not primarily about your children and their future, and whether the dikes in the Netherlands will hold up. First and foremost, it concerns all those people who are already continuously being driven from their land by climate catastrophes, often the result of decades of colonialism, exploitation, theft of land, raw materials, water, freedom, felling of forests, mining, racism, oil pipelines such as the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP). And war, and more colonialism and theft. As long as the money flows into the pockets of the arms trade, the fossil industry, the agro-industry. And yes, what happens in Palestine has everything to do with it. But hey, who cares if phosphorus bombs are dropped on civilians, hospitals are bombed, schools, universities, streets. That children die and Zionists dance on their graves. Who cares that the oppressed, far away, are the first to suffer from climate change? That’s what we fight for in the first place. And not because ‘otherwise refugees will come here’, as I also heard in the climate movement, again an expression of white selfish self-interest… No, because it is unjust that those who pollute the most suffer the least from it, and those who pollute the least suffer the most. That’s what climate justice is about. And you would expect that whoever uses that as a motto for a climate march would also mean it… But okay, if we first have to go through the cowardly organization of a climate march while fighting, then so be it. Enough!

So no, it’s not good. I’m still furious. I want to see these people bite the dust. I want them to stand back and learn that demanding justice takes courage. That you don’t win by kicking down but by kicking up. That taking the comfortable center position, not making choices that can be very hard and that are not easy, that this is not what struggle is. There you are with your big stage and your video screens in front of tens of thousands of people, embarrassing yourself terribly. But we saw the courage of Sahar and Sara. We saw Greta save the face of the climate march. The organization of the climate march should be deeply grateful to her.

We need radical solidarity and climate justice and struggle. Without compromises. I don’t want to have to face another screaming white woman accusing me of chanting through something while two brave women have just been gagged and then taken away. Cut it out. Over and done with it.

For now I’m done ranting. I prefer to save my energy for bigger, more powerful enemies. We have to move on. Tuesday sit in at Schiphol for Palestine. 18 hours. Next climate actions? I don’t know when or how. First this. No climate justice on occupied land! NO CLIMATE JUSTICE ON OCCUPIED LAND! That still echoes in my head. And we will be chanting that over and over again!
